Threat Bulletin 1004: ACK flood against a retail banking platform in the Benelux

On Thursday 2 January 2025 at 21:26 UTC, a ACK flood targeted a retail banking customer in the Benelux. The attack peaked at 80.2 Gbps and lasted 11 minutes. Traffic originated from 3679 autonomous systems in 118 countries, predominantly a Mirai-derived IoT botnet.

The attack was preceded by a publicly announced sales event. Edge packet filters identified the flood by source port and payload signature and dropped it at line rate across 12 points of presence.

  • Enable authenticated origin pulls.
