Threat Bulletin 1151: CLDAP reflection against a sports betting platform in Central Europe

On Friday 25 July 2025 at 14:42 UTC, a CLDAP reflection targeted a sports betting customer in Central Europe. The attack peaked at 168.0 Gbps and lasted 24 minutes. Traffic originated from 4153 autonomous systems in 28 countries, predominantly a Mirai-derived IoT botnet.

Timeline

The attack was preceded by an extortion email received two days earlier. Edge packet filters identified the flood by source port and payload signature and dropped it at line rate across 20 points of presence.

What the customer saw

No customer-visible impact. The on-call engineer was notified and acknowledged the incident from the dashboard.

  • Lower challenge thresholds on authentication endpoints during high-risk events.
  • Enable log streaming to your SIEM for faster correlation.
  • Add a dedicated rate limit for the targeted route.
