Threat Bulletin 0135: memcached amplification against a video streaming platform in the Nordics

On Thursday 2 September 2021 at 16:44 UTC, a memcached amplification targeted a video streaming customer in the Nordics. The attack peaked at 236.1 Gbps and lasted 86 minutes. Traffic originated from 2503 autonomous systems in 103 countries, predominantly a headless-browser farm.

Timeline

The attack was preceded by a ransom note demanding payment in Monero. Edge packet filters identified the flood by source port and payload signature and dropped it at line rate across 38 points of presence.
