Threat Bulletin 0215: memcached amplification against a news publisher platform in Iberia

On Monday 20 December 2021 at 17:19 UTC, a memcached amplification targeted a news publisher customer in Iberia. The attack peaked at 330.7 Gbps and lasted 73 minutes. Traffic originated from 2113 autonomous systems in 72 countries, predominantly a Mirai-derived IoT botnet.

Timeline

The attack was preceded by a publicly announced sales event. Edge packet filters identified the flood by source port and payload signature and dropped it at line rate across 13 points of presence.
