Threat Bulletin 0333: HTTP POST flood against a developer platform platform in Western Europe

On Saturday 4 June 2022 at 07:20 UTC, a HTTP POST flood targeted a developer platform customer in Western Europe. The attack peaked at 887.3 million requests per second and lasted 153 minutes. Traffic originated from 888 autonomous systems in 27 countries, predominantly compromised cloud VMs.

Timeline

The attack was preceded by a ransom note demanding payment in Monero. Request rates on the targeted routes exceeded their hourly baseline by a factor of 755 within 21 seconds. The risk score of participating clients crossed the challenge threshold automatically and proof-of-work difficulty rose with origin load.

  • Keep origin IPs out of public DNS history.
  • Lower challenge thresholds on authentication endpoints during high-risk events.
