On Monday 28 November 2022 at 17:12 UTC, a search endpoint flood targeted a sports betting customer in the UK. The attack peaked at 209.8 million requests per second and lasted 6 minutes. Traffic originated from 1649 autonomous systems in 64 countries, predominantly hijacked home routers.

Timeline

The attack was preceded by an extortion email received two days earlier. Request rates on the targeted routes exceeded their hourly baseline by a factor of 231 within 12 seconds. The risk score of participating clients crossed the challenge threshold automatically and proof-of-work difficulty rose with origin load.

  • Keep origin IPs out of public DNS history.
