Threat Bulletin 0524: HTTP GET flood against a online payments platform in the Nordics

On Saturday 25 February 2023 at 16:14 UTC, a HTTP GET flood targeted a online payments customer in the Nordics. The attack peaked at 447.5 million requests per second and lasted 90 minutes. Traffic originated from 1581 autonomous systems in 110 countries, predominantly misconfigured open reflectors.

Timeline

The attack was preceded by a ransom note demanding payment in Monero. Request rates on the targeted routes exceeded their hourly baseline by a factor of 892 within 11 seconds. The risk score of participating clients crossed the challenge threshold automatically and proof-of-work difficulty rose with origin load.

No customer-visible impact. The on-call engineer was notified and acknowledged the incident from the dashboard.

  • Keep origin IPs out of public DNS history.
  • Enable authenticated origin pulls.
  • Add a dedicated rate limit for the targeted route.
