Threat Bulletin 0725: HTTP/2 rapid reset against a video streaming platform in the Benelux

On Friday 8 December 2023 at 01:41 UTC, a HTTP/2 rapid reset targeted a video streaming customer in the Benelux. The attack peaked at 236.5 million requests per second and lasted 101 minutes. Traffic originated from 945 autonomous systems in 77 countries, predominantly a headless-browser farm.

Timeline

The attack was preceded by a hacktivist channel announcing the target. Request rates on the targeted routes exceeded their hourly baseline by a factor of 295 within 28 seconds. The risk score of participating clients crossed the challenge threshold automatically and proof-of-work difficulty rose with origin load.
