Threat Bulletin 0740: HTTP POST flood against a gaming community platform in the Middle East

On Saturday 30 December 2023 at 12:17 UTC, a HTTP POST flood targeted a gaming community customer in the Middle East. The attack peaked at 99.8 million requests per second and lasted 34 minutes. Traffic originated from 66 autonomous systems in 22 countries, predominantly hijacked home routers.

Timeline

The attack was preceded by an extortion email received two days earlier. Request rates on the targeted routes exceeded their hourly baseline by a factor of 507 within 40 seconds. The risk score of participating clients crossed the challenge threshold automatically and proof-of-work difficulty rose with origin load.
