On Thursday 23 September 2021 at 01:03 UTC, a carpet-bombing UDP flood targeted a electronics retail customer in the Middle East. The attack peaked at 162.6 Gbps and lasted 46 minutes. Traffic originated from 2521 autonomous systems in 50 countries, predominantly a Mirai-derived IoT botnet.

Timeline

The attack was preceded by a hacktivist channel announcing the target. Edge packet filters identified the flood by source port and payload signature and dropped it at line rate across 23 points of presence.
