Threat Bulletin 0218: HTTP POST flood against a crypto exchange platform in the Middle East

On Saturday 25 December 2021 at 02:21 UTC, a HTTP POST flood targeted a crypto exchange customer in the Middle East. The attack peaked at 210.0 million requests per second and lasted 75 minutes. Traffic originated from 2567 autonomous systems in 113 countries, predominantly a headless-browser farm.

Timeline

The attack was preceded by an extortion email received two days earlier. Request rates on the targeted routes exceeded their hourly baseline by a factor of 73 within 16 seconds. The risk score of participating clients crossed the challenge threshold automatically and proof-of-work difficulty rose with origin load.

Recommendations

  • Lower challenge thresholds on authentication endpoints during high-risk events.
  • Enable authenticated origin pulls.
  • Keep origin IPs out of public DNS history.
