On Friday 4 February 2022 at 12:08 UTC, a GRE flood targeted a sports betting customer in the UK. The attack peaked at 104.0 Gbps and lasted 179 minutes. Traffic originated from 3456 autonomous systems in 53 countries, predominantly a headless-browser farm.

Timeline

The attack was preceded by a ransom note demanding payment in Monero. Edge packet filters identified the flood by source port and payload signature and dropped it at line rate across 16 points of presence.

No customer-visible impact. The on-call engineer was notified and acknowledged the incident from the dashboard.
