Threat Bulletin 0355: CLDAP reflection against a video streaming platform in the Nordics

On Tuesday 5 July 2022 at 20:24 UTC, a CLDAP reflection targeted a video streaming customer in the Nordics. The attack peaked at 124.8 Gbps and lasted 39 minutes. Traffic originated from 2999 autonomous systems in 70 countries, predominantly a rented booter service.

Timeline

The attack was preceded by a ransom note demanding payment in Monero. Edge packet filters identified the flood by source port and payload signature and dropped it at line rate across 27 points of presence.

What the customer saw

No customer-visible impact. The on-call engineer was notified and acknowledged the incident from the dashboard.

Recommendations

  • Lower challenge thresholds on authentication endpoints during high-risk events.
  • Keep origin IPs out of public DNS history.
  • Enable log streaming to your SIEM for faster correlation.
