Threat Bulletin 0485: CLDAP reflection against a crypto exchange platform in Iberia

On Saturday 31 December 2022 at 05:19 UTC, a CLDAP reflection targeted a crypto exchange customer in Iberia. The attack peaked at 275.2 Gbps and lasted 121 minutes. Traffic originated from 4157 autonomous systems in 43 countries, predominantly a Mirai-derived IoT botnet.

Timeline

The attack was preceded by a competitor’s product launch. Edge packet filters identified the flood by source port and payload signature and dropped it at line rate across 22 points of presence.

  • Review allow-listed partner ranges quarterly.
  • Lower challenge thresholds on authentication endpoints during high-risk events.
  • Enable authenticated origin pulls.
