Threat Bulletin 0542: TLS handshake exhaustion against a retail banking platform in the UK

On Wednesday 22 March 2023 at 01:56 UTC, a TLS handshake exhaustion targeted a retail banking customer in the UK. The attack peaked at 390.9 million requests per second and lasted 110 minutes. Traffic originated from 4196 autonomous systems in 114 countries, predominantly misconfigured open reflectors.

Timeline

The attack was preceded by a hacktivist channel announcing the target. Request rates on the targeted routes exceeded their hourly baseline by a factor of 97 within 29 seconds. The risk score of participating clients crossed the challenge threshold automatically and proof-of-work difficulty rose with origin load.
