On Monday 25 December 2023 at 13:48 UTC, a TLS handshake exhaustion targeted a online payments customer in Southeast Asia. The attack peaked at 692.8 million requests per second and lasted 11 minutes. Traffic originated from 2124 autonomous systems in 59 countries, predominantly a Mirai-derived IoT botnet.

Timeline

The attack was preceded by a hacktivist channel announcing the target. Request rates on the targeted routes exceeded their hourly baseline by a factor of 343 within 13 seconds. The risk score of participating clients crossed the challenge threshold automatically and proof-of-work difficulty rose with origin load.
