Threat Bulletin 0815: search endpoint flood against a ticketing platform in North America

On Sunday 14 April 2024 at 00:15 UTC, a search endpoint flood targeted a ticketing customer in North America. The attack peaked at 957.7 million requests per second and lasted 63 minutes. Traffic originated from 182 autonomous systems in 52 countries, predominantly a Mirai-derived IoT botnet.

Timeline

The attack was preceded by an extortion email received two days earlier. Request rates on the targeted routes exceeded their hourly baseline by a factor of 643 within 17 seconds. The risk score of participating clients crossed the challenge threshold automatically and proof-of-work difficulty rose with origin load.

  • Enable authenticated origin pulls.
  • Lower challenge thresholds on authentication endpoints during high-risk events.
