On Friday 8 November 2024 at 20:40 UTC, a search endpoint flood targeted a news publisher customer in the UK. The attack peaked at 780.6 million requests per second and lasted 144 minutes. Traffic originated from 1630 autonomous systems in 41 countries, predominantly a Mirai-derived IoT botnet.

Timeline

The attack was preceded by an extortion email received two days earlier. Request rates on the targeted routes exceeded their hourly baseline by a factor of 499 within 22 seconds. The risk score of participating clients crossed the challenge threshold automatically and proof-of-work difficulty rose with origin load.
