On Tuesday 30 December 2025 at 01:37 UTC, a GRE flood targeted a retail banking customer in the Benelux. The attack peaked at 28.8 Gbps and lasted 60 minutes. Traffic originated from 979 autonomous systems in 93 countries, predominantly a Mirai-derived IoT botnet.

Timeline

The attack was preceded by a breaking political story. Edge packet filters identified the flood by source port and payload signature and dropped it at line rate across 31 points of presence.

  • Lower challenge thresholds on authentication endpoints during high-risk events.
